i just want to update my kernel from a CD i burned using XP. i can see the file when i mount it but cannot load it.
i'm trying to get Fedora loaded on my Laptop... no love yet.

Did you burn the kernel-xxxxx.rpm on the CD ?
Or did you burn the whole ISO installation images to CD ? If so, you should see multiple files and directories on the CD. If it doesn't boot (most likely a BIOS CD-drive issue) let me know and I know a utility for booting.
