Try running alsamixer and verify that the line input is unmuted.

You could also check out aumix, I've found that on a laptop on which FC1, the mixer settings always revert back to zero everytime the machine is rebooted, regardless of whether or not the configuration was saved. Launch it, and see what the levels say.
