It was the Macintosh's! I burnt the CDs (only the 1st one to begin with :-) with my home linux machine and sure -- they booted. Now I have a nice linux system working on my laptop!

did you use cdrecord under OSX, you should give that a try next time. There is even a xcdroast for mac.
