A simpler method, well two actually. 

1) at boot, from the grub screen press a, this will let you edit the
kernel parameters, add a 3 to the end of the list and boot into text
mode.

or:

2) press ctrl-alt-F1, this will swap to a text screen, log in as root.
at the prompt type telinit 3 and press enter. this will shut down all X
sesions. install your drivers, then type telinit 5 which will restart X
and gdm.

just to be safe, after changing your X config, type startx and make sure
it works before doing telinit 5.
