1) Changing the subject doesn't change the underlying information. If you take a close look at the headers from this list, they contain information about which message this message is in reply to. Some email clients are able to take this information and build a tree so you can view the messages to the list more like a newsgroup. This helps most of us as messages tend to range about 200-300 per day on average.
2) "ide=nodma" actually turns off DMA for the ide interface. There are known issues with some BIOSes and CD-ROM manufactures and the CD drive can choke on DMA transfers. It will slow down the transfer and give the CD-ROM time to pass the information to the ide interface in a SAFE manor. This usually fixes problems like this.
