Cool.
When things are working adequately it can be time to sit back
and let others sort the details out.

The vast majority of what I outlined is non destructive and applies to
any package so it is sometimes worth just going slightly nuts and
thinking about how to debug things like this.

I saw notes in the recent X11 related pile of updates that there are
more and more cross checks and fixes for little setup things that
haunt folks in this group.  bit by bit....
