My modem is the Siemens Gigaset. I didn't find any version or release
number on the case nor in the documentation.

The documentation says that the address of the modem is 192.168.1.1.
Actually, if I give "ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.2", I can even look at
modem status and statistics accessing the modem internal web server with
Mozilla.

Just like you, I didn't change anything by hands, I only used
"system-config-network". I admit I made some test playing with DNS,
route, and such, but unfortunately I cannot backtrack them any longer.

My situation is different from yours, in that I have just the interface
to the Internet (eth0). But that's puzzling me, just the relation
between eth0 and ppp0: how they are related? Can I change eth0 address
without affecting ppp0, or must I set it just in one way? And what is
that way?

I'll be back tomorrow with the output you asked for.

Many thanks.
