Here are a few things you might try to isolate the problem:
1) Are you able hear audio CDs that you play in your computer? (I can)
2) If you run "alsamixer" on the command line, what is your "PCM" volume
set to? If it's set to 0 and not muted, then are you able to set it to a
value > 0? (I can't)

No, my problem is different. I can adjust the pcm, but i can hear nothing...
but in your case... tried to load the pcm module?
modprobe snd-pcm-oss
I have no luck with alsa...
