fixed it - I just had to power cycle.

but I am still confused on why modprobe was written to
I didnt run soundcard-conf or anything I watched a flick and powercycled.

modprobe is chmoded 644.

it could be a friend with a rootkit messing with me but I'm pretty mindful (iptables, etc.)

does anyone have any insight - is it an mplayer bug? there is nothing on the mplayer site about a problem like this. http://www.mplayerhq.hu/DOCS/HTML/en/bugs.html

also everyone who had emu10k1 drop off - check for modprobe.conf~ and rename it modprobe.conf (backup both first!) it might fix your problem
