I've found that sometimes which dvd-playing software package works
better depends on the dvd.

It may be that it won't help, But have you tried ogle, or mplayer?

Both are yum installable, Not sure from which repository I got them
from though, I use fedora, freshrpms and dag's... 

So far I haven't found a dvd that one or the other of them won't play,
though sometimes I have to select chapter mode or some such to get it
started.
