mbstring in PHP

I get this error:

Checking extension mbstring is loaded or loadable: False
The mbstring extension is needed to fully support unicode (utf-8) or
other multibyte-charsets.

I try to recompile up2date PHP but I still get this error, I get it in
my test enviroment and my live enviroment? So is not just one box....?

Is there a quick solution to this?????
