It's a Sharp PC AR50 (Pentium III 800MHz), I think it's fairly unusual, no sign of support in the UK or any BIOS upgrades...
FWIW I use an IBM Thinipad T40 - which works reasonably well with APM
So far there are reports of several machines of the same vintage as my current one, possibly working with APM or ACPI. It sounds like I would struggle to buy a new machine that would work out of the box :(
