listing it with yum list gives

You don't think you want to do a yum update for the kernel. The kernel should always be installed. I do not think yum distinguishes with packages in that fashion, (updates if it is a "regular" package and does an actualy install for packages such as the kernel).

Have you tried:

yum install kernel ?

Give that a shot, hope this helps,

Alex White
