Updates Killed Gnome FC2?

Hi, before I start, any an all relevant logs are attached.

I decided to do a fresh install of FC2 rather then upgrade. Hey it's
gotta be easier, right? Installed the OS then booted into my new account
(not root). Everything is fine and dandy. I let up2date do it's thing
with these new fangled mirror selection functions. This is what it got:

up2date installing packages:
'cvs-1.11.15-6'
'gaim-0.77-7'
'kdelibs-3.2.2-6'
'kdelibs-devel-3.2.2-6'
'libgnome-2.6.0-3'
'libgnome-devel-2.6.0-3'
'nfs-utils-1.0.6-22'

I'm running this on a laptop so I have it off overnight. In the morning
a strange occurrence greets me. Logging in a my user I get an error
dialog about Xkb. I know what your thinking, but it's not 'that' one.
The message itself is identical to 'that' one but it's a fresh install
so the xorg.conf file is correct and no stray options exist. Whats worse
though is that Gnome has lost ALL it's icons. Everything is replaced
with either a white piece of paper. Or a really naff old icon. i.e. the
mozilla lizard head. All icons have disappeared from the menu too. It's
just text. Also the background has disappeared, replaced with plain
black. All my panel setting have reverted to fresh install. i.e. chunky,
no batt. mon. etc. Bugger, I think.

Log into KDE. Works fine. Log in as root to gnome and it too works fine.
i.e. all is as it should be for a default install with no error dialogs.
Create new user, log in. Same problems as above. Arrgh.

Right check I didn't do any thing wrong. Re-install, log in, it works.
Run up2date, log out, log in, Arrgh it's done it again.

So I figure, One of these updates (guessing at libgnome) is creating an
incorrect file permission or perhaps many, causing this to happen.
Though I'm not exactly an expert and so don't really know how to track
it down. What can I do?

Thanks for any help / guidance you can give.
