Thanks very much, I did a search for this bug beforehand but I guess I didn't try the correct search terms. Changing permissions to all users for the pango file fixed the problem.

Now I have another problem... in trying to fix the fonts issue, I have obliterated my desktop; I don't even have a task bar (gnome-panel) anymore. How do I "reset" this as if I had just created a new user?
