I found that CTRL-ALT-Fx to a console and then ALT-F7 back again also seems to fix it in some cases.
This has not solved it in Kernel 2.6 based machines (i.e. FC2) - that used to be my trick too.
I'm using a basic Belkin 4 port KVM (PS/2 based, no usb or audio)
