I have found that the usb stick isn't always recognized as /dev/sda1 but sometimes /dev/sdb1. I found this by tailing the messages log
One way this can happen is if you forgot to umount it. Automount (aka autofs) is a cool service that monitors the mountpoint (ie, /mnt/flash or whatever) and dynamically mounts the associated device on access. Then a configurable period after the last access, eg, 2 seconds, it automatically and cleanly unmounts the device. usbautomount (see the URL in my sig) uses this to make USB devices accesses a lot simpler.
I find that plugging the camera into the computer changes things as well. USB needs more work from my point of view.
There is a devlabel service as well that can make available /dev/sdn at a fixed alias depending on what it is, but I didn't look into it yet.
The problem was that I hadn't even mounted the stick yet. This happened the very first time that I plugged the stick in.
I played with autofs and the stick would mount some times and then others it wouldn't. I just gave up as I needed to get some work done.
I will check out your site though. I would like autofs to work.
I think it may have something to do with changing usb devices.
When time permits I will take another look at it. -- Robin Laing
