With the help of the following article posted here on the list, I've been entirely successful , and recommend the article.  Followed it verbatum (name, variables, and passwords were changed to protect the innocent).

Excellent doc by the way, an excellent how-to, a get it up and running type of tutorial I wish there was more of.

I have heard good things about "nut" but have not used it. I believe it is included in FC1.

Please let us know when you make this work... I have a couple of UPS's (also APC serial) that I must connect but I have not had the time to scratch this particular itch.
