What is the baud rate of the serial port that it is connected to?

    stty -a -F /dev/ttyN
    stty -a -F /dev/cua[0-3]

How did you setup your modem connection.  There should have
been a place to set the baud rate.  See also: setserial, mgetty, mingetty.
