So it appears that ALSA's sound chipset chart isn't entirely
incorrect...

If you enabled the esd output plugin in xmms and in gaim, you wouldn't
have this problem.  Of course, you'd need to enable esd in GNOME as
well.

Any other app that didn't 'talk' to esd would have the same issues.
