Mount/unmount seems to be the problem with our SMP boxes as well.  The
machine runs fine until I try to umount something (i.e. the CDROM). 
This is reproducible on each box when running SMP kernels.  Next we are
trying to disable HT on the servers.  The hardware is HP Proliant DL360
w/ dual Xeon 2.4GHz CPUs.  This behaviour does not occur on our old
Proliant 1600 w/ Dual PIII 600.  Also the old box does not use X at
all.  The new boxes do.  YMMV
