I disagree, the first upgrade you do with your kernel, you won't see the hard drive, stay away from Promise products with Linux, they admit they have poor or no support for Linux and are software RAID.

The Promise FastTrak will work fine as an IDE controller. Attempting to use the driver based raid features can only end badly. Read the ataraid list archives for details. The HPT 372 is said to be much the same, but I'd not used it much.
