The others are saying to use the "poweroff" command, and not
"powerdown". I run a Dual Athlon CPU system, and I have to put
"apm=power_off" (Remember to use an underscore, and not a hyphen) to the
end of the grub command line (Modify grub.conf file) to poweroff my
system. And it works every time.
