Please do not hijack foreign threads. You message now has misleading
reference to the thread "Fedora the right choice?". So always start new
threads with a new, empty editor window. Thanks.

To your question: edit /etc/grub.conf (if using grub) and append to the
kernel line the parameter apm=power-off. If you use lilo you need a
line: append="apm=power-off". Check if that lets your PC powerdown
automagically.

P.S. update your kernel, it has several security issues.
