I have geforce4 4800 on athlon 2200+ (1.9GHz effective)

Has anyone any experience with 4496 - 5336 peformance difference?

That might be what's wrong. It's reporting too high of the actual FPS maybe?

Naw. My K6-2/500 with a Geforce4 mx/440 at 1280/1024 gets 188 fps
maximized (around 1600, at default window size).

I have the following system.

AMD Athlon XP 2500+

GeForce FX 5200 128MB RAM

However, when I run glxgears maximised, I only get a frame rate of
108FPS. something is obviously wrong. Is anyone else having issues with
the 5336 drivers, or could I have a serous problem with my config. I
checked XF86config and everything is as it should be.

Are you sure something is wrong?
Isn't 108fps for a -maximized- glxgears pretty impressive?
(My work machine only gets 20fps when run 24bit at 1280x1024.)

You might want to figure out if you are running interlaced or non-interlaced, try 256 colors and up and/or a lower resolution.
