According to GNU it is incompatible with the GPL (the Apache license), but
that's because of a part of the Apache license dealing with patents.  The GNU
says the patent clause is a good idea and the next version of the GPL will
probably include it. 

In other words, this is not a philisophical difference or rift between Apache
and GNU.
