Is your iptables allowing connections on port 21?

Yup. I actually do not have iptables running since I use linksys firewall/router.

I wonder if it is something with the linksys? It is an older unit and I
had to update the firmware to get it to work with my Netlock Linux VPN
client.

Is port forwarding set up on the linksys?

I have one location where I do similar, and what you can do is set the external interface of the linksys, port 21 to forward to port 22 of your linux box. That way you only need to connect from your work on port 21 but do not need to change the port your home box listens on.
