When upgraded to kernel 2.6 my mouse, the X-Window system, and my soundcard failed to work. I couldn't get past the boot process because I could see what was happening as soon as it went into the GUI. It also went into the GUI latter than usual because it said there were module errors or something. Anyway I'm glad I have two backup kernels, LOL. I'm going to screw around with it later and see if I can get it working; I just don't want to screw up my global setting. The issue regarding the filesystems might be related to changes to the 2.6 kernel after the *-81 (development version). If you are using reiserfs volumes, this might be the problem that you are seeing. If you are not running reiserfs voumes, I don't know what is causing your particular lockup.
As for sound problems with the 2.6 kernel, this has to be cnfigured with alsa (in the kernel). You have to figure out which module is used for your card though. Also, it is defaulted as muted or slide bars are down on the mixer. You might need to open up your sound mixer and adjust the controls to your particular desires.
