Actually, I found the tarball incredibly easy to build binaries with. Simply prepare the non-root user's rpmbuild environment as outlined in the FAQ, the do an "rpmbuild -ta <tarball>". Twenty minutes or so later, voila... courier-imap plus all the goodies.
