GDM says I need to use "switchdesk" to change my default Switchdesk will create 2 files in your home directory .Xclients and .Xclients-default. So just put 'exec startxfce4' (without quotes) in .Xclients-default and change your startup session to 'Default' in GDM/switchdesk and you should be good to go.
