I am one of those that buys the cheapest CD-R's. I find that burning them at 1/2 or 1/3 max speed produces good images. And at a fifth the price I am happy with the slow ones for most things. I always slow the write speed down when I make distribution disks for myself or friends. I do this on the assumption that they may also be needed for the rescue mode when you cannot just burn another.
