I understand your desire to get a piece of unknown hardware working. 
It's a great challenge sometimes.  But there's no reason to let it get
to the point that it drives you to hair plugs.

Get a $5 NIC from your local PC store, preferably something like a cheap
Linksys/Netgear (that's known to work).  Then twiddle with the unknown
card in your spare time.
