Log in at that point with root password and run fsck on the broken
partitions.

Ran fsck on /dev/hda1 and /dev/hda2 after logging in as root.  Problem was
still there.
Grabbed the Red Hat Recovery CD and tried the above after rebooting.  No
luck.

Ran e2fsck -cv /dev/hda1  and e2fsck -v -y /dev/hda1.

There anything else I should try ?
