What is the output of :
cdrecord -scanbus
cdrecord -scanbus dev=ATAPI:
cat /proc/cmdline
?

Maybe the permissions on your devices or to cdrecord/readcd/cdrdao are wrong. 
You could try to run K3b as root and see if it helps.
