Be sure the cable you use for this direct link is a crossed ethernet
cable. Then choose an IP from same net and the connection is no problem.
Any further depends on your aims. Maybe you want use NFS oder Samba? You
didn't say anything about that. Or do you want to share the internet
connection of the workstation?
