If you use mail to read the list you should use an IMAP server and thus
just downloading of those emails you want to read or you even want to
reply to. A client only fetches the mail header info from the IMAP
server while a client connected to a POP3 server always has to fetch the
whole message.

I'm not familiar with IMAP. All I've used are pop3, like the Eudora I'm on now, Kmail, and the browser versions...
