The desktop I use in office is an 845GL based machine, and I have no problems getting into 24-bit mode - all I needed to do was set teh BIOS option to increase shared memory from 1 MB to 8 MB. The issue is more likely your notebook itself, or rather its BIOS. If you could let us know what notebook (make/model) it is, someone could possibly help you further.
