printing man pages with groff gives double/triple images

What is the trick to get a good print job on man pages using groff?

I'm using:
  `groff -t -man -Tps filename |lp'

All the Heading lines like `DESCRIPTION', `SYNOPSIS' etc appear to
have been double/triple printed one on top the other but slightly
forward each time DDDEEESSS but with the letters overlapped.

Another place I see it is like so:

man cut:
   SSSYYYNNNOOOPPPIIISSS
     ccuutt -bb list -m [file...]

So the headline and some of the sub heads appear like this.
Again, the letters are actuall overlapped by more than half.

I realize there are other ways to do it, like with col -b but the
groff formatting is the best by far... when it works.
