Well, jar is zip, as long as I can remember. .tgz compress a little bit
more than it. And it's one line of code on /etc/cron.daily

If cpu time required for compressing is not a matter to you, you should
really try bzip2. I was having trouble wih backups on a small company I
work for, as every user was using almost 900 mb, and every user has its
own backup cd... Changing to bzip2 turned this files to an average of
250mb (!), keeping room for two backups on each cd, thus reducing media
and recording time cost. But the time for processing it on server just
doubled.
