IRQ 3, huh.... is ANYTHING detected as a USB device on that machine?  A 
possible explanation is that your USB Host Controllers are misconfigured, 
perhaps thanks to the BIOS, to use an IRQ that is in use by COM2... This 
sounds likely since any working USB device calls attention to itself very 
strongly when plugged in and will create some noise in /var/log/messages.
