The company owns the mail system and can therefore dictate the purpose and use of it. Most US companies periodically distribute a memo that says the e-mail system is for business use only and that mail may be monitored. There has been a number of court cases about monitoring business mail that has gone all the way to the USSC. In practice, monitoring is only done if there is a reason. Maybe Craig's boss has a reason.
