If it's an external modem, you might be able to get it to work by just
telling the internet configuration wizard (under System Tools in
the default menus) /dev/ttyS0 (or/dev/ttyS1 ... if /dev/ttyS0 doesn't
work) instead of/dev/modem...

External serial modems generally need no configuration to work with
Linux, so Kudzu shouldn't be an issue.
