Yup you said it there. APM is nice and set but ACPI needs allot of work still. I hope that this can change in the next year though. Especially with the new Linux Kernel coming out soon. I would love to have the features that you have on your thinkpad on my Sony PCG-V505BX laptop.
My main hardware issues is the ACPI and the crappy ATi drivers. My laptop is new but has the Radeon M6 LY which ATi does not support yet. Xfree has a pretty poor driver on that as well. The last thing which I did not talk about is the Intel i810 driver under alsa. The drivers almost work but still choppy. I use OSS at the moment but if Linux starts to move toward using ALSA instead it would be nice to have that fixed. Other than that all is well. Fedora is working great for me.
