This has been discussed multiple times on this list.  TCP connections
have been disabled by default.

To quote

/etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf

change the following line:

FROM:

#DisallowTCP=true

TO:

DisallowTCP=false

Now restart gdm.  Should work now.
