Yes.  I'm running OpenLDAP on a Red Hat 9 system, with Fedora and Red
Hat 7.3 systems authenticating against it.  I'm also storing my DNS
records and automount maps in LDAP.

Next step is Evolution address books, and making them user modifiable.
