I agree completely with you on this. It is time for us to give them what
the want! Childs Play is what people like. Point and click. The main
thing is to make Linux (Fedora) so easy to use, people will never have
to use the shell. People think that it is a bad thing. As if that
happens the shell will be taken away from them. I think if people
designed their software to have simple mode and expert mode that it
would make things allot easier for your everyday Joe to use. Let us take
a calculator program for example. It is a very basic application. A good
software design that I like in a calculator program is to have the basic
and the scientific views. Now this done and said that is what we need to
do with most software. Your everyday person will never even use the
scientific view, but it will always be there if you need to use it. You
may think that you always use the scientific view. Now you are just not
your everyday person now are you. In short I am saying make all configs
GUI point and click. No more of this go to the shell thing. You can
always do it that way if you like. Leave that option in. After all it is
GNU Linux. We need point and click partitioning, formating, install and
uninstall applications, module adding and disabling, and just about
anything else you can think of. Simply put, if you need to open a shell
for a task make a GUI for it. Anything you can think of for everyday
use. I can list hundreds of people that would use Linux if this was so.
Like I was talking to someone today about drop and burn cds in Fedora.
That would be a great thing to add to start with. So many things to say
that I don't want to bore you all with it. If the every person you are
after then make it so. We already use Linux so don't try to get us to
use it ;). We already are :). Now let us make applications or GUI front
ends to simple tasking commands that would scare my Mom from ever using
a computer again.

Cheers,

P.S. Please don't bash me for this. It is just an opinion and I think
that we are thinking on the wrong terms. We already have all the
smartest or whatever you want to call us people using Linux. Shell crazy
commando freaks. Now let us make the tools to get the rest of the world
to use Linux too. Like my Mom asked me last week "If Linux is so much
better why can't I right click the CD and burn some songs?". I paused
for a second and said that is something I would like to change.
