I know you're not going to like the response, but I didn't have any
problems updating from RH7.3 to RH9 other than the installer crashing in
the middle of disk 2. Doing an apt-get upgrade-dist after reboot
replaced the rest of the packages. The important thing is the aic7xxx
and megaraid modules loaded flawlessly.

I suspect some strange "solar flare" driven problem like the one I'm
having with SMP on this workstation.

Are there any good resources for a beginner on learning to debug these
more obscure problems?
