I've got a 386 with 32MB of RAM that's running Red Hat 8.0. I've kept updating the distro periodically since RH 5.0 (at the time, it hat 5MB RAM). Starting around Red Hat 7.something I couldn't boot the installers, so I upgraded the "naughty way" (updating the RPMs live).
Sometime soon I'll probably try the same technique to get it running Fedora... after all, the Fedora RPMs *are* compiled with --march=i386, right? ;)
Don't bother... use RULE:
http://www.rule-project.org
Documented installs in 8MB of RAM and on 486 machines. Will most likely do all that you want.
