Yes. However, I was not sure if that could work that way. I know it works for when your ram isn't being fully detected, but wasn't sure if you could use that to limit it - so I just went the sure way with it.

Rather than changing the hardware, have you thought of telling the kernel
you only have 512Mb at install time, ie. add mem=512M to the boot options?
