What I think he meant is that for the average joe user going in to the nearest store and buying software and hardware their is still work to be done. Yes i know and you know there is alot of oss alternatives, but that doesn't mean joe user knows. When they start offering software on store shelves, like games, and entertainment products for linux then linux is ready for anyone. I do not think he meant it is a limitation in linux itself but a limitation in the way people use, purchase, and learn about new computer products.
